Botox for sweating and for calves in Korea: what to ask instead of trusting a ranked list
Written by KCODI medical interpreter team · English deskUpdated · 9 min read
People searching for the best clinics for hyperhidrosis botox in Korea are usually two searches deep already. They have read that Seoul does this cheaply and often, and they want a name to book.
We will not give you a ranked list, because the lists that exist are advertising and none of them has examined you. What interpreters can give you is the set of questions that separates a good appointment from an expensive one, and the answers you should expect to hear.
The same questions work for the other request that brings people here: calf botox for leg slimming. The medicine is the same. The reasoning behind it is not.
Sweating first: is botox even the right step?
Excessive sweating has a proper medical name, hyperhidrosis, and a proper ladder of treatments. Botulinum toxin injections are approved for hyperhidrosis of the armpits, where they reduce or stop sweating for roughly three to six months. For palms and other sites they are used off-licence.
Before that rung, there are cheaper ones. The NHS advises seeing a doctor if heavy sweating has lasted at least six months, happens at least weekly, wakes you at night or stops you getting on with your day, because another condition or a medicine can be behind it. Stronger antiperspirants, a prescription cream, iontophoresis and oral tablets all sit below injections on the ladder.
If the sweating is severe and repeat injections are not practical, there are lasting options: several methods of removing or destroying the underarm sweat glands, and, for the most severely affected, surgery on the sympathetic nerves. That last one carries real risks and is a specialist decision, not a holiday booking.
What actually differs between Seoul clinics
Clinics in Gangnam inject botulinum toxin all day. The variation you should care about is not prestige, it is these four things.
| What to compare | Why it changes the result | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Units and area | Sweating and calves both need a lot more than a frown line | How many units, over how many injection points? |
| Which brand | Korean and imported toxins sit at different price points | Which product, and may I see the vial and the box? |
| Who injects | A doctor should hold the syringe | Does a doctor inject, and how often does this doctor treat this area? |
| Follow-up policy | Under-dosing shows up two weeks later, not on the day | Is a two-week review included, and is a top-up extra? |
That last row is the one people forget. Botulinum toxin does not show its full effect on the day; it settles over roughly two weeks. If you fly home after three days, nobody sees the result but you. Ask before you book what the clinic does if the effect is uneven, and get the answer in writing.
Brand names and what they mean are covered separately in our guide to Korean botox brands, and the per-area price range sits on the botox page.
Calf botox and leg slimming, honestly
Calf botox injects botulinum toxin into the calf muscle so it works less and, over weeks, sits slightly smaller. It is popular in Korea and it is not a weight-loss treatment. If what fills your calf is fat rather than muscle, the injection does very little, and a good consultation starts by working out which you have.
- Ask the doctor to check the calf with you standing on tiptoe, which is when the muscle shows.
- Ask how many units per leg and over how many points, and what that means for your walking in the first weeks.
- Ask what happens as it wears off, because this is a repeat treatment, not a permanent change.
- If you walk or run seriously, say so before anything is injected. Weakening a working muscle has consequences a price list does not mention.
- Ask what the plan is if one calf responds more than the other.
Some clinics also offer Korean calf reduction surgery, which works on the muscle or its nerve supply rather than relaxing it temporarily. It is a real operation with real recovery, and plenty of Seoul surgeons will talk you out of it if your calf shape is mostly fat or mostly bone structure. Treat any clinic that offers it in the same visit as a first consultation with caution.
Planning it around a short trip
Injections themselves are quick, and the botox page shows the usual appointment length. The planning problem is the two-week settling period, not the appointment.
- Book the consultation and injection early in the trip, not on the last day.
- Expect small marks and possible tenderness for a day. Underarms are easy to hide; calves ache more when you have been walking Seoul all day.
- Skip the sauna, the jjimjilbang and heavy exercise for the rest of that day, and ask the clinic how long it wants you to wait.
- Ask for a photo record and the unit count before you leave, so any clinic at home knows exactly what was done.
- Agree how you will send a photo for review at two weeks, and in what language someone will answer.

Choosing the clinic, without a ranking
There is no published ranking of Korean clinics for either of these treatments, and any page that offers one is selling placements. What you can check is concrete: that a doctor examines and injects, that the product is named on your quote, that the clinic is registered to treat foreign patients, and that someone answers you after you fly home.
