Zygoma reduction in Korea, and how it fits with genioplasty and jaw shaving
Written by KCODI medical interpreter team · English deskUpdated · 9 min read
Zygoma reduction in Korea is bone surgery. The cheekbone is cut, moved inward and fixed with small plates and screws. It is not a filler, a thread or a laser, and it belongs in a different conversation from anything with a needle.
It also rarely travels alone. Clinics that do cheekbone work usually do genioplasty and jaw angle reduction too, and consultations drift quickly from one bone to three. That drift is where quotes double and where visitors lose track of what they agreed to.
Our interpreters sit in these consultations and read these consent forms. Here is what each operation changes, what recovery honestly looks like, and the questions that keep the plan yours.
Three bones, three operations
Korean surgeons treat the upper, middle and lower thirds of the face as separate problems. A wide face from the front is usually cheekbone. A long or short chin seen in profile is the chin bone. A square outline along the jaw is the mandible angle.
| Zygoma reduction | Genioplasty | Jaw angle reduction (jaw shaving) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Korean term | 광대축소 | 턱끝성형 | 사각턱 수술 |
| What is changed | Cheekbone body and arch moved inward | Chin bone cut and repositioned | Angle of the mandible trimmed |
| Seen best from | Straight on | Profile | Three-quarter view |
| Anesthesia | General | General | General |
| Incisions | Inside the mouth, plus a small one at the sideburn | Inside the lower lip | Inside the mouth |
| Main trade-off to ask about | Soft tissue sagging over time | Lower lip numbness while the nerve recovers | Numbness and a long swelling tail |
Most of these incisions are hidden inside the mouth, which is why people are surprised there is nothing to see externally and still cannot chew properly for a week. The full range of bone work, including double jaw surgery, sits on our facial contouring page.
What zygoma reduction actually does
The surgeon makes cuts in the cheekbone body and in the arch that runs back toward the ear, moves the segment inward and down slightly, then fixes it with titanium plates and screws. The face narrows across the widest point and the outline reads softer from the front.
The honest trade-off is soft tissue. Skin and fat that used to sit on a wider frame now sit on a narrower one. In some patients, especially with thinner skin or more laxity, that shows as mid-face sagging months later. A careful surgeon raises this before you do. If yours does not, ask.
A korean cheekbone reduction plan sometimes also includes fixation choice, and that is a real question: how the segment is fixed affects how stable it is and how much movement is possible. Ask which method is planned for you and why.
Genioplasty, and why it is not a chin implant
Genioplasty cuts the chin bone and moves it. Forward, backward, up, down, or rotated to correct a sideways deviation. Because it moves your own bone, it can shorten a long chin or narrow a wide one, which an implant cannot do.
A chin implant sits on top of the bone and adds projection only. It is a shorter operation with a simpler recovery. Both are offered in Korea and they are not interchangeable, so if the quote says chin, ask which one it means. Our Korean jawline guide covers the non-surgical end of the same question.
Lower lip and chin numbness after genioplasty is normal for weeks and occasionally months while the mental nerve recovers. Ask your surgeon what the expected timeline is, and what would count as unusual.
Jaw shaving and the V-line promise
Jaw angle reduction trims the flared corner of the mandible. Some plans add cortical bone shaving along the outer surface to reduce width, and some add a chin procedure to complete the taper. Bundle all of that together and clinics call it V-line.
Searching jaw shaving surgery cost korea returns numbers with no context, because the same phrase covers a single-angle trim and a three-part bone operation. The estimated range lives on the facial contouring page, and what moves it is in how much full face surgery costs.
Recovery: what the first two weeks really look like
This is the part visitors underestimate. Facial bone surgery is a general-anesthesia operation with intraoral wounds, and eating, speaking and sleeping all change for a while.
- Day 1: consultation, 3D CT, blood tests, written quote. Surgery usually the next day.
- Day 2: surgery, then one night in the clinic in most cases. Drains and a compression band.
- Day 3 to 5: swelling peak. Liquid and soft food only. Mouth rinses after everything you drink.
- Day 6 to 8: drains and stitches out, first clear look at the outline under the swelling.
- Day 10 to 14: post-op CT, final check, and permission to fly. Most patients plan around two weeks in Seoul.

Swelling after bone surgery has a long tail. The outline you see at two weeks is not the result. Months pass before the last of it clears, and clinics say so in the consent form rather than in the brochure.
Before you pay a deposit
- Confirm the name of the operating surgeon, in writing, and confirm it again on the morning of surgery.
- Ask whether a 3D CT was taken and ask to see your own bone on the screen, not an example case.
- Ask what the revision policy is if the two sides settle unevenly, and get it in writing. Our revision surgery page explains what revision usually involves.
- Ask about the anesthesiologist: whether a specialist is present for the whole operation.
- Ask what the plan is if you develop an infection after you fly home, and who you contact.
- Check the clinic is registered to treat foreign patients before you transfer anything. Our guide on checking a clinic licence shows where to look it up.
If you would rather start from a shortlist than from a search result, clinic matching narrows it in about two minutes, or meet the interpreters who cover plastic surgery and bone cases.
