The lip flip, the jelly roll and the sad smile: tiny botox doses around the mouth and eyes

A botox lip flip is the smallest cosmetic injection most clinics offer. Two to four units along the upper lip border relax the muscle that curls the lip inward, so a little more pink shows when you smile. No volume is added.
Around the mouth and eyes, the muscles are small, layered and close together, so dose matters more than technique. All four wear off faster than forehead botox. The lip is the shortest because you use that muscle constantly, every time you eat, drink or speak.
The lip flip: what it does and what it does not
A lip flip works for a specific complaint: your upper lip disappears when you smile, or you show a strip of gum above it. It does not make thin lips fuller. If you want visible volume, that is lip filler, and the two are sometimes done together, filler first and a small flip afterwards.
The effect appears over three to seven days and fades faster than people expect. Clinics in Korea tend to dose it low on a first visit and add a touch-up, because the correction for too much is time, not an antidote.
An upper lip flip gone wrong is almost always a dosing problem, not a permanent injury. Typical complaints: the lip feels stiff when pronouncing certain letters, one side lifts higher than the other, or liquid escapes at the corner when you sip. All of them resolve as the toxin wears off over six to ten weeks. An asymmetry can sometimes be balanced sooner with one or two units on the stronger side.
The jelly roll under the eyes
The jelly roll is the ridge of muscle that bunches directly under your lower lashes when you smile widely. Some people like it. Others feel it makes their eyes look smaller in photos. One or two units on each side soften it.
This is a cautious area. Dose too much or place it too low and the lower lid can look hollow, or the eye can water for a few weeks because the lid no longer hugs the eyeball as tightly. A puffy lower lid that is there whether or not you smile is not a jelly roll at all — that is fat, and it is treated with under-eye fat repositioning.
Sad smile and drooping mouth corners
A sad smile, sometimes called a downturned mouth, happens when the small muscle at the corner of the mouth pulls harder than the muscles that lift. Botox to lift corners of the mouth relaxes that downward puller, so the corner sits a little higher at rest. It is a millimetre effect, not a new face.
Two things limit it. If the corner is turned down because volume has dropped in the cheek and around the mouth, an injection into the muscle will not help; a small amount of filler along the marionette line does more. And if the skin itself is loose, neither will hold it. That is when Seoul clinics start talking about thread lifts or lifting devices instead.
- Pull the corners of your mouth down hard in a mirror. The band you feel tighten beside the chin is the muscle being treated.
- Now smile normally. If the corner lifts easily, botox has something to work with.
- If the corner stays low even when you smile, the problem is skin or volume, and an injection into muscle is the wrong tool.
Planning it into a Seoul trip
All of these take ten to fifteen minutes and need no downtime beyond small red dots that fade within an hour. You can fly the same day. The useful thing is to schedule them early in your trip, so a touch-up visit fits before you leave.
- Day 1: consultation and injection. Photos taken in the clinic's light.
