Korean dark spot treatment starts with naming the spot
Written by KCODI medical interpreter team · English deskUpdated · 8 min read
A Korean dark spot treatment is the most requested thing in Gangnam skin clinics and the one most often bought blind. The reason is simple: four different conditions look like a brown patch, and the laser that clears one of them can make another worse.
Our interpreters translate this consultation constantly. The useful part is never the device name. It is the moment the doctor points at the screen and says which of the four it is.
This guide explains the four, what clinics in Korea actually use for each, what the word whitening means on a Korean clinic menu, and what moves the price.
Four things that look like the same brown patch
Before any treatment, the doctor should name the pigment. Ask for the name in English and write it down.
| Name | Looks like | Typical approach in Korea | Risk of getting it wrong |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freckles (주근깨) | Small, scattered, darker in summer | Short laser course, clears well | Low |
| Sun spots / lentigines (검버섯) | Larger, flat, defined edges, on sun-exposed skin | Targeted laser, often one or two passes | Low |
| Melasma (기미) | Symmetrical blurry patches, cheeks and forehead | Low-energy toning over months, plus topicals and strict sun care | High: aggressive laser can worsen it |
| Post-inflammatory pigment | Brown mark where a spot or wound was | Time, sun protection, topical course | Medium: treating too early irritates it |
Melasma is the one that catches visitors out. It is chronic, it fluctuates with sun and hormones, and it is managed rather than cured. A clinic that promises to clear melasma in one session is describing a sales package.
What Korean clinics actually use on dark spots
- Laser toning: many low-energy passes over a course of sessions. The workhorse for diffuse pigment and melasma, and the one that needs patience.
- Targeted pigment laser: higher energy on a defined spot. Good for sun spots and freckles, and usually followed by a small scab for about a week.
- Topical prescription: tretinoin, azelaic acid, tranexamic acid and similar, often the part that keeps the result.
- Chemical peel: surface pigment and texture, in a course.
- Strict sun protection: the only step that works on all four and the one everybody skips.
The procedure page for the laser side is pigmentation laser, with the estimated range rendered there. If the spot is raised, changing colour or new, it belongs with a mole check before any cosmetic treatment.
What skin whitening clinics in Korea really mean
Korean clinic menus use whitening (미백) in a narrow sense: reducing excess pigment and evening out tone. It does not mean changing your natural complexion, and reputable clinics will say so plainly.
Two things sit under that heading. One is the pigment treatment above, which is mainstream dermatology. The other is the injection menu, mostly glutathione and vitamin drips, which we cover honestly in the Korean glutathione injection guide and the Korean IV drip menu. The evidence for systemic skin lightening from those drips is weak, and regulators in several countries have warned about unapproved use.
Skin bleaching creams bought outside a clinic are a separate matter. Products containing high-strength hydroquinone, mercury or unlabelled steroids are sold online in many markets and cause real damage. If a cream has no ingredient list you can read, that is your answer.
What a Korean skin whitening treatment cost depends on
Clinics quote per session or per course. In prose we do not type amounts, but the drivers are always the same and you can check them at the desk.
- Which laser, and how many sessions the course contains. Toning courses are long by design.
- Whether the price is per area or per full face.
- Whether the topical prescription is included or charged separately.
- Whether a doctor performs the laser or a nurse does under supervision.
- First-visit event pricing versus the regular price on a second visit. Ask for both.

A realistic plan for a one-week trip is one consultation, one or two sessions, a prescription to continue at home, and a follow-up by message. If a clinic wants a ten-session course paid up front before you fly out, ask what happens to the unused sessions and get the answer in writing.
For the marks left by acne rather than by sun, start at Korean acne spot treatment. For everything else on the dermatology menu, clinic matching narrows it in about two minutes, or meet the interpreters who cover skin clinics in Gangnam.
